No Optical Brighteners

Although some sulfates can be milder when used in moderation, generally sulfate-free products may offer a gentler, more hydrating, and environmentally-conscious approach to cleaning for personal care and household needs.

Non TOXIC

Nontoxic things aren't poisonous. It's generally safe to eat or breathe nontoxic substances, and they don't harm the environment. ... Toxic waste poisons the groundwater or makes nearby animals sick, but nontoxic waste tends to break down without any negative consequences.

The term non-toxic is, shockingly, unregulated. The only written regulation around the term comes from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) who is the governing body that administers the Federal Hazardous Substance Act. They define a toxic product as one that ‘can produce personal injury or illness to humans when it is inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin.’

The CPSC act details that a product must kill half or more of a group of lab rats to be considered toxic. There is a lot of very specific and confusing language in the section that indicates what the dosage and exposure time has to be in order to be considered toxic. For example, if a toxic substance kills 49% of its test subjects, it can still legally label itself non-toxic!

The bottom line on “non-toxic”: the term in and of itself doesn’t tell us that much. However, products labeled non-toxic are a great place to start your research. The burden is on us, as consumers, to educate ourselves on the ingredients in our products and to select brands who are making responsible decisions in the space.

Non-corrosive cleaning formulas aim to provide effective cleaning without causing damage to surfaces, especially metals. This is a significant advantage over many traditional heavy-duty cleaning products that rely on harsh or acidic chemicals that can be corrosive, posing risks to users and surfaces.

Nonylphenols are nonionic surfactants used as cleaning agents in detergents and other industrial applications. Nonylphanols have an estogenic effect on humans and have been linked to developmental abnormalities as well as an increase of breast cancer cells. As a result, the use of nonylphenols is under review by the EPA and is prohibited in the EU.

Para Aminobenzoic Acid. Some people experience photo-allergenic reactions when in contact with PABA. Some reactions include burning, itching, painful blisters, and acne which is why many countries have banned PABA in personal care products.
